The government have announced plans to exempt small music venues from the Licensing 2003 Act. If the proposal goes through, live music performances for under 100 people would no longer need a licence.
This is good news for musicians, as it would undoubtedly make it easier for event organisers to put on live music, so opportunities to perform in front of a live audience would hopefully increase as a result.
Here’s the link to the proposal on the DCMS website: http://www.culture.gov.uk/reference_library/consultations/6499.aspx
Thanks to Voluntary Arts Network for the tip.

You might have noticed that Musical Busker has been rather quiet of late. Unfortunately due to other commitments, it has been quite difficult to find the time to blog about all the interesting and exciting things that happen in the world of busking.
However, it seems a shame that all the useful opportunities and news that reaches the Musical Busker inbox shouldn’t get the promotion they deserve. So because of this, there’s now a new Musical Busker fan page on Facebook, where you can post your own opportunities, get in touch with other buskers, ask questions and find out about interesting places to perform.
The best opportunities and interesting discussions will be promoted here on the blog, but to instantly link up with the UK busking community, the Facebook Fan Page is the way to go.

Barnsley Town Centre Management are looking for some buskers to perform in the town centre on various dates from May to October 2009. There’ll be some specialist markets taking place in the town on Sundays over the next few months, so they’re looking for musicians to provide enertainment during those times.
There’s no fee, but you’ll be able to collect money and the markets should attract plenty of people so there could be a good audience waiting! Also, you don’t need a busking licence if you volunteer for one of the available slots.
Here are the dates available:
Sundays: 3 and 24 May, 21 June, 12 July, 2 and 23 August, 13 September, 4 and 25 October.
To find out more and volunteer to perform, contact Gemma Carter, Town Centre Management Assistant on 01226 772 149.
